A completely new Ring Cycle at one of the USA’s premier opera houses is always a reason to celebrate, given its relative rarity and the opportunity to witness another interpretation, this time by one of the world’s pre-eminent opera directors and producers, David Pountney. For Ring aficionados the staging is important (and typically open to comment and active discussion!) however, the music and artistry are paramount. So far, with three of the four operas already staged within the Lyric’s 2016-2018 seasons, the verdict is overwhelmingly positive that Sir Andrew Davis and a prestigious cast have delivered the goods. Highlights so far have been Eric Owen’s riveting portrayal of Wotan/Wanderer and Christine Goerke’s peerless singing as Brünnhilde, with sterling performances by Burkhard Fritz as Siegfried and Brandon Jovanovich as Siegmund. We will have to wait until 2020 to savor the awesome conclusion of the tetralogy as part of the complete Cycle.
We have selected the second Cycle that runs over six days from Monday, April 20 through Saturday, April 25 and the party will be staying at The Ritz-Carlton Chicago, the 5 star luxury hotel perfectly situated at Water Tower Place in the heart of Chicago’s prime retail district. The hotel has been recently re-opened after an extensive refurbishment and revitalization.
The seating, in the desirable center Orchestra section, entitles membership in the exclusive Valhalla Circle, including special learning and other privileges as well as a tax-deductible contribution that will go to support the Lyric Opera and its artistic objectives.
Monday, April 20 7:30pm Das Rheingold
Tuesday, April 21 6:00pm Die Walküre
Thursday, April 23 6:00pm Siegfried
Saturday, April 25 5:30pm Götterdämmerung
Our days together in Chicago will include a discussion with artists, pre-opera talks, backstage tour and Ring receptions (full details will be developed closer to the dates). Daytime activities will feature a visit to the Art Institute of Chicago as well as an architectural tour focusing on Frank Lloyd Wright. A firm favorite Longer! Louder! Wagner! at Second City will be offered on April 22 or 24, along with an option to enjoy a Chicago Symphony Orchestra evening on April 24.
As a special highlight we are extremely pleased to announce that private receptions by Chicago based friends of Act 1 Tours and Lyric Opera will be incorporated in our social proceedings during the week.
